Why do only a fraction of the unfair dismissals applications that are lodged in the Fair Work Commission (2- 3%) proceed to arbitration?

Please join members of the Industrial Relations Society of Queensland to hear Dr Andrew See, Barrister at Law, (see Andrew’s bio below) explore and share his research around:

  • Why do workers pursue arbitration for the resolution of an unfair dismissal remedy application;  
  • What are the main factors and influences on why matters resolve at the various stages of the FWC conciliation and arbitration process; and
  • Whether some types of unfair dismissal case are less likely to be resolved by conciliation?

Dr Andrew See

Barrister at Law


Andrew See has studied and worked in industrial relations since 1982. 

Andrew has been a barrister at the Queensland Bar since 2004.  

Andrew has served in senior policy management roles in the Queensland Government.  

Between 2011 to 2020, Andrew was a Resident Magistrate in the Republic of Fiji, where he sat on the Fiji Employment Tribunal. Today he is engaged in a mix of consulting, advocacy and academic activities, working throughout Australia and the Pacific. 

This session is complimentary for IRSQ members.
